Cashmere producers are able to engage in performance recording or not as they see fit. For those wanting to performance record via ACGA Merrrit, it’s been kept as simple as possible.
For each individual animal as a kid (first year) and or hogget (second year) fleece testing and parentage information is needed.
- All cashmere goats need to be eartagged. Each animal ID (tag number) in your herd must be unique; it can NOT be duplicated.
- The Sire and Dam for each animal should be recorded.
- The animal’s date of birth, if single, twin etc.
- The sex of the animal (M, F or W)
- Fleece data required:
- Date of shearing
- Total fleece weight
- Fleece to be sampled using an approved method, either of these is acceptable.
- a) Quartering Method (Divisional Method) see Goat Notes for directions on how to sample using this method. Goatnotes/F7 ‘Sampling the fleece for testing’
- b) Cashmere Fleece coring machine.
- Send samples to the test house and ask for a Cashmere yield and micron test.
- Collate the animal records and fleece results into the Excel file ‘Animal recording’ and send back to the ACGA for Merrrit analysis.
